MMM Group Limited (MMM) was proud to be a silver sponsor of, and an active participant in, the recent Canadian Conference on Earthquake Engineering held in Victoria, B.C..
The west coast of British Columbia is part of the Pacific Ring of Fire wherein the probability of a major damaging earthquake is greater than anywhere else in Canada. The conference’s theme was Facing Seismic Risk and focused on identifying the risks we face and sharing the latest research and advances in earthquake engineering and knowledge.
Jianping Jiang, Vice President, Bridges, and Saqib Khan, Senior Project Engineer, both from MMM’s Vancouver office, presented two technical papers; the Base-Isolation Retrofit of the MacDonald Cartier Bridge in Ottawa, and the Performance-Based Seismic Design of the Evergreen Line of Vancouver’s SkyTrain Rapid Transit System.
In addition, Saqib Khan was the coordinator and one of the main presenters for a full day workshop at the Conference on “Performance-based Bridge Design to the new S6-14 Canadian Highway Bridge Design Code.” This course provided highlights on the changes in seismic design approach in the new S6-14 code, and gave some practical guidance on modelling, analysis, and design of bridge structures located in areas of high seismicity.
