Surrey Memorial Hospital Acute Care Tower Wins B.C. Engineering Award
MMM Group Limited (MMM) recently rounded off a successful night at the Association of Consulting Engineering Companies British Columbia (ACEC-BC) awards gala; seeing its Surrey Memorial Hospital Acute Care Tower project take home an Award of Merit in Buildings, as part of the 2014 Awards for Engineering Excellence.
Located in one of Canada’s fastest growing and diverse communities, the Surrey Memorial Hospital required expansion and redevelopment to meet the needs of a quickly growing population. As British Columbia’s largest healthcare project, the 57,394m2, eight-storey critical care tower expansion will provide a world-class facility to deliver significant improvements to patient care in Surrey.
The largest acute care site for the Fraser Health Authority, serving approximately 1.6 million people, the project required integration with the existing hospital and surrounding neighbourhood. With its prominent presence on King George Boulevard, the new tower compliments the current development in Surrey, and was aptly designed to be adaptable to future needs and growth.
The MMM team completed a sustainability design approach for environmental, economic, and social sustainability to attain LEED Gold. It utilized durable natural materials such as concrete, wood, structural steel, and masonry; and selected building materials that emit low amounts of volatile organic compounds. The collaborative team created a high-efficiency mechanical and electrical system and designed state-of-the-art energy efficient technologies. The project was delivered using staged permit and construction packages to facilitate the fast-track process needed to meet the project schedule.
The ACEC-BC Awards for Engineering Excellence program recognizes and celebrates outstanding accomplishments in engineering, in six categories.
