The Lees Avenue Bridge – Rapid Bridge Replacement project was recognized with an Award of Excellence in Engineering from the Ontario Region of the Canadian Institute of Steel Construction (CISC). This honour was received at the recent Ontario Steel Design Awards of Excellence and History of Strength Gala.
In 2011, MMM was retained by the Ministry of Transportation Ontario to complete the detail design, preparation of contract documents, submission review, and construction liaison for the entire project. The design team established unusual and extraordinary design innovations and solutions for the rapid replacement of Lees Avenue Bridge. Having to deal with complex bridge geometry, changing the bridge from a three-span to a two-span structure, maintaining existing traffic lanes on the highway, and complex construction operations, the team completed the rapid replacement of the bridge in less than 16 hours. This was the first time a replacement of this kind was implemented in Ontario.
CISC is the primary association for Canada’s steel construction industry, representing a diverse community of steel manufacturers, fabricators and constructors, engineers and architects, owners and developers, and educators and students and offering its members a variety of tools to enhance capabilities, and grow businesses.
