MMM Group Limited (MMM) was recently honoured for its work on the New Quito International Airport (NQIA) with the 2014 Consulting Engineers of Ontario (CEO) Award of Excellence for firms with more than 350 employees.

The award was presented as part of CEO’s 12th annual Awards Gala in Toronto, which recognized projects that have enhanced the economic, social, and environmental fabric of Ontario, and locations across Canada and around the world. Winners were selected by a panel of professionals representing client groups, professional associations, and academia who are not currently engaged in consulting practice.

MMM was the prime consultant for the recently opened NQIA in Ecuador, S.A., which is being developed in phases over a 30+ year concession period. The project’s initial phase included a 38,000-m2 four-level passenger terminal, landside and airside infrastructure, an air traffic control tower, airport and airline support facilities, a stormwater management facility, and water treatment and sanitary treatment plants.

MMM was responsible for all of the engineering design for the Phase One development with the exception of the architectural and geotechnical design. The team overcame many unique challenges that were presented by the project site, which is a 1,400-hectare plateau sitting 350 m above rivers that surround it on three sides, and is located on the equator, within the Andes Mountains, in one of the most seismically active areas in the world.

As a result of careful planning, due diligence, best practice strategies, and dedication to detail, the project was successfully completed on time and on budget. The winner of several prestigious international environmental, corporate responsibility, and airport design awards, the project provides the City of Quito with a much-needed world-class airport, and has the potential to catalyze the local economy and increase the accessibility of the region.
